Tuesday, April 28th, 2008
Silent Movie Theatre

Join us for Wholphin's return to the Silent Movie Theatre on Tuesday, April 29th. We will be screening a selection of films from the upcoming sixth issue of Wholphin, including a documentary about a class of Chinese third graders who hold a democratic election for classroom monitor and in the process end up hilariously, if unintentionally, mocking 300 years of American Politics; a beautifully black, comic exploration of 70s England that isn't, but could easily be, the prequel to A Clockwork Orange; the winner of the Wholphin Award at this year's SXSW, Benh Zeitlin's Glory at Sea; an animated fake rock star taking on a heroin-addicted carnival monkey; drunk bees and more!

IFC Center
Tuesday, February 12, 2008
8:00PM
323 Avenue of the Americas, New York

Editor Brent Hoff will screen a selection of Wholphin docs concerning giant paper airplanes, drunk bees, satanic Scottish 9-year-olds, the world champion one-handed blind-folded Rubix Cube master, the ancient art of tree-hanging, an infuriating expose of the US Govt.'s arm twisting, horse thieving assault on two Shoshone Indian grannies, and a short film about Darfuri rebels literally smuggled out of Sudan in the back of a horse cart.
Stranger Than Fiction pass holders will receive a free copy of Wholphin.

San Franciscans: Jessica Yu's new film, The Protagonist, will be opening at the Kabuki Theatre on Friday, December 14th and like Sour Death Ball's before it, the film observes people squirming in truly uncomfortable situations, except this time instead of a painfully sour attack on the salivary glands, it's men falling victim to Euripidian extremism. And yes, there is a tragic puppet chorus. Find out more about it here.

Screening of "A Day with Darfuri Rebels"
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 8:00 PM

Everyone talks about Darfur, this place we should be doing more about, or for, or against, and everyone bravely tries to pronounce "Janjaweed" correctly, but filmmakers David Martinez and Shane Bauer have just returned from Darfur and they have brought back an amazing film of that place we hear a lot about but never get to see. If you're in the Bay Area on Wednesday December 14th, 2007 we would like to plant mental mind control messages in your brain compelling you to come see an early preview of their incredible film, "A Day With Darfuri Rebels," which will appear on the upcoming Wholphin No. 5.

WHOLPHIN ISSUE #3 ANNOUNCEMENT:

A few years ago Paul Thomas Anderson made a short film starring none-other than Elliott Smith, as a Rastafarian basketball player. Amazing, right? If Paul can find it in one of his 4 storage units in LA he has graciously promised to let you see it.

Also, a man does not just come up with scenes like the "Fuck me Mr. M" scene in Election out of thin air. No. Alexander Payne was seriously, torturously, funny even in college and we have his first student film to prove it.

Plus, hopefully, an excerpt from this compelling new Zidane documentary, and oh man so much more. We are peeing ourselves with glee.

WHOLPHIN ISSUE #2 ANNOUNCEMENT:

We are sorry that Wholphin #2 is not yet spinning in your DVD players, but we wish to share with you the very good reason for the delay.

When Steven Soderbergh emails you to say that he's willing to take a day out of the hyperproductive tornado of his life to make a short cinematic homage to Godard's Alphaville for your little upstart DVD magazine, you stop production and praise Ganesha for your unbelievable good fortune. Ganesha is the mischievous Hindu god whose head was cut off by his father Shiva, replaced with the head of an elephant, and now rides around on a mouse. So. OK.

In short, there will be a Soderbergh original on the next DVD (along with monkey-faced eels, melting heads, sour death balls and more), and it ships mid-June.

Thank you for your patience.
