Liner Notes
The idea was to do all the effects ‘on camera’. We would make one stop-motion animation; then print every frame of that onto photo paper; then make a second animation of a character looking at the photo – in each frame of this, the photo is replaced with the next one on the pile. This meant the film had to be shot in a very specific order.
Development was intensive: the script went through ten drafts. What started as a heartfelt tragedy ended up as a comedy!
The exteriors were filmed during a bitterly cold winter: the actors had to sit still for extended periods, and the limited light meant we had to work like crazy. Whole scenes had to be changed or re-shot, and sets collapsed in the middle of the night.
Post was the biggest challenge: thousands of frames had to be Photoshopped by hand, and I had to write several pieces of new software. I realized how much it was taking over my life when Denise called me at midnight on New Year’s Eve. I hadn’t even realized it was 2006 as I was hunched over my computer!
It really started to come alive when sound was added. Neil did a fantastic job and worked and reworked the score and Foley effects with us to get just the right tone.
Production took about a year – three months each for development, prep, shoot and post.
